Children Lessons
FAQ
1. Why and when should my child learn Chinese?
Why?
It will be one of the most rewarding investments you will ever make in your child's life.
I thank my parents until today for putting a great emphasis on my English learning when I was young, because their persistence has truly helped me double my choice in life. Now, I speak Chinese, my native tongue, that helps me communicate with one fifth of the world population and connect to the world's fastest growing economy. I also speak English well, a language that enables me to have an access to all the valuable information and ideas in modern times, both online and offline. I am grateful for my parents' endeavor and I believe your child will feel the same way when they grow up.
When?
The rule of thumb is the earlier, the better.
Children at young age are able to learn a foreign language in the most natural way, by connecting sounds with objects they see, hear, or feel. The ideal age I recommend to start learning Chinese is four to twelve years old. Children younger than four can absorb the information just as well as older kids, but they usually are not able to fully participate in a classroom environment as efficiently and responsively as older ones.
2. Can I learn with my kids?
Yes. I offer children's family classes where up to one adult and one child in the same family can take a class together with me. Imagine what an educational and fun family activity it is! However, parents will have to understand that the approach of teaching a kid Chinese is very different from that of teaching an adult. Most likely, kids don't have past experiences to draw from, so they don't learn a language through grammar and sentence structure. Instead, they learn it through sound recognition, games, songs, pictures matching and role plays. When you attend a class with your child, you will notice that I will accommodate your kids' learning style most of the time but I am sure you will learn a lot of new things while having fun and bonding with your children.
3. My friends also have kids who want to learn Chinese. Do you offer kids' group class?
Yes. I highly encourage interested parents to take the lead to put together a group class for kids (no more than six) of similar age. Kids usually become more active and involved when they are around their peers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you need any help.
